Objectives and Strategic impact

The SCINTILLA Project has 4 objectives:

  • providing usage specific detection solutions in form of devices targeted at difficult to detect radioactive sources and nuclear materials
  • providing SCINTILLA Toolbox in form of sensor sub-systems based on new and/or improved technologies for the detection of difficult to detect radioactive and nuclear materials
  • providing Test-bed services and organise Technology Benchmarks for SCINTILLA Partnership Network
  • optimising efficiency and impact of the SCINTILLA project by effective management and development of the SCINTILLA Partnership Network

Expected Impact: The SCINTILLA project will make available new or improved technologies able to detect low or difficult to detect radioactive sources and nuclear materials. It will therefore contribute to minimise the risk of use or dissemination of such substances in the population.

But SCINTILLA's impact will significantly exceed the expected impact in several respects:

  • By proposing effective substitutes for Helium-3 SCINTILLA will contribute to the resolution of a strategic threat to Europe, the increasing difficulty to procure Helium-3 for the current generation of RPM.
  • The SCINTILLA Test-bed services and regular Technology Benchmarks will make sure that the SCINTILLA Toolbox will stay open to best-of-breed technologies and new developments.
  • Building a sustainable SCINTILLA Partnership Network with worldwide scope will ensure Europe stays at the front of this area which is critical for the security of Europe and its citizens.
