Created in 2002, Symetrica develops, manufactures and markets equipment for the detection and identification of radioactive threat materials. It works with prime contractors and government agencies to design, develop, test and deploy detection equipment for use throughout the homeland security market. The Symetrica R&D centre is based in Southampton, UK and it operates a dedicated manufacturing and sales facility near Boston, Massachusetts. It has about 30 employees worldwide, the majority of whom are specialists in their respective disciplines.
Symetrica is involved in the project on two levels. The first is sensor development with the aim of further developing isotope identification, isotope classification and Helium-free neutron detection instrumentation. The second is focussed on enabling the integration of these instruments, developed by consortium members, into the “Scintilla Toolbox” for user evaluation and assessment. Symetrica’s project activities include the further development of personnel portal instrumentation, He-free neutron detection modules, communications architecture between sensors and integration activities for the benchmarking if personnel portals and luggage screening.
